Airsoft is a fast-paced sport that can lead to injuries if precautions are not taken. In addition to following game rules and being respectful to your fellow players, it's important to keep yourself protected at all time. From your eyes to your knees, here is a quick break down on what you need to get before you step into the battlefield.
Commonly made of plastic, airsoft BBs are spherical in shape and come in several different weights. The weight will often dictate muzzle velocity depending on the airsoft gun. The most common type of ammo is 0.20g which is considered the standard. BB weight also plays a role in airsoft gun type you have. You have a gas blowback pistol or CQB rifle, 0.20g and 0.25g BBs are you best option, while 0.28, 0.30g and heavier are ideal for bolt action sniper rifles. Airsoft Megastore carries BBs from brands like GoldenBall, Elite Force, G&G and KWA.
Most AEGs are powered by NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), LiPo (lithium polymer), and other lithium-based batteries. They are several types of battery configurations. There brick/flat, stick and nunchuck/butterfly. The shape of the battery you need depends on where the connectors – which will most likely be a large or mini type Tamiya -- are located on your airsoft gun. NiMH batteries can be recharged with a standard wall charger, but a smart charger is recommended to prevent over charging. LiPo batteries on the other can only be charged with a balance charger. Using any other type of charge will permanently damage the battery and can cause the battery to explode.
Personal protective equipment is an absolute must for every airsoft player. While airsoft BBs will not cause serious injuries when played in a safe environment, the absolute minimum needed is eye protection. You can either use googles or ANZI-rated sunglasses. However, lower face masks are also recommended to protect your teeth, which are prone to injury if not covered up. Full face masks, which are required in some airsoft fields, are the safest bet as they protect your whole face and ears for most types. Lastly, airsoft knee and elbow pads provide even more support especially if you plan to shoot in kneeling or prone positions.
