Airsoft Games: Prolonging Airsoft Skirmishes with Medics

In airsoft play, a medic is a player who has the ability to re-spawn injured or dead players. In others words, the medic can touch a dead man or injured player and "heal" them, allowing the player to re-join the game. You can either play Medic, a game focused around the medic concept, or introduce medic(s) into another form of airsoft skirmish. There are several possible variations of the medic option worth considering:

Will the medic be a single player on the team, several members, or will all players have medic abilities? The fewer medics on a team, the more valuable the medic becomes. Too many medics and your game may never end... which is not necessarily a bad thing.

In games where there are multiple medics, can a medic "heal" another medic? If everyone has medic abilities, of course they can, but if you only have a few medics in the game, this question becomes more important.

Will the medic(s) be armed? In some instances, medics are not armed, making their situation more challenging and precarious. In others, they are only allowed one pistol. Or in some instances, medics are fully armed.

Will medics heal on contact or require a certain amount of time for the player to be restored? If the touch heals the player instantly, game play is a bit easier. Requiring a certain amount of time to elapse is more challenging. For example, you might require a medic keep contact with the patient for 10 consecutive seconds before that patient is healed.

Can medics carry arms and/or ammo to downed players? The longer you plan the game to last, the more attractive this option becomes. Oftentimes, players run out of ammo and get shot during long skirmishes. In some instances, your medic can also become an effective re-supply strategy.

Airsoft FAQ: What is a Hi-Cap and why do I need one?

Hi-Cap is a commonly used abbreviation for High-Capacity, specifically a high-capacity magazine used with electric airsoft guns. If you are new to airsoft and plan on participating in team skirmishes, a hi-cap specific to your AEG is a must. These magazines hold up to ten times more airsoft BBs than a standard mag, and will allow you to stay engaged in game much longer and with fewer loading breaks.

While a standard magazine uses a conventional expanding spring, a hi-cap magazine uses a more space-efficient band spring that winds into a coil. (A hi-cap magazine can only fire when there is sufficient tension in the coiled band spring.) Winding the spring is easy… simply turn the wheel which is usually located at the base of the magazine until you hear a distinctive clicking noise which indicates that the spring is ready. To load, use a funnel or your hand to pour the BBs into the opening at the base until the reservoir is visibly full. Next, make sure your AEG is set to safe mode, and slide the hi-cap into the base of the gun. When the hi-cap is properly in place, you should hear the BBs enter your airsoft AEGs feed point. That means you are ready to go. Once loaded, a hi-cap magazine will give you a continuous supply of ammo during airsoft play and ensure that you can cause maximum damage on the field.

When you have finished using the gun, it is important to store it correctly. This means releasing the tension in the Hi-Cap's spring. To do this, hold the hi-mag upside down over a bag, box or container (to catch BBs that fall) and press the release button (usually located next to the feed hole.) You will hear the spring unwind and BB's will fall out. After the spring is completely unwound, empty out any lingering BB's and you are ready to store your high-capacity mag until your next skirmish.

So, now that we've covered the basics, I want to address the more complex issue of upgrading your rifle. The internet makes it easy to buy the upgrade parts for less, but it is important to understand that sometimes you will need to loop in a professional to get the job done right. If you dive into an upgrade on your own, you risk damaging the rifle and voiding your warranty. For best results, use a certified professional airsoft technician / shop. In most cases, you can have that professional show you how it's done. This will give you a better understanding of how the firearm works which will help you troubleshoot issues in the future.

Needless to say, there are a lot of upgrades to consider. For the sake of simplicity, I'll summarize a few of the most common upgrades for electric airsoft rifles below. Once you identify the upgrades you are interested in, you can contact an authorized retailer like Airsoft Megastore for further information and advice. In many cases, one upgrade may require further upgrades in order to make sure the parts are compatible.

Hop Up. There are two parts to Hop Up that you may consider upgrading. Hop Up Bucking puts back spin on the bb. A quality bucking will improve your shot accuracy. Piston. The piston is a flat-toothed gear that is maneuvered by the motor and spring. Because of the tremendous pressure on the piston, quality counts. Metal pistons are a common upgrade but in some firearms they may strip gears. I recommend discussing possible piston upgrades with a professional so that you can determine what will work best for you.

Spring. Upgrading your spring will increase the velocity of the piston. If you plan on upgrading your spring, you will need to make sure your internals are upgraded as well to avoid damaged gears and pistons.

Spring Guide. The spring guide does just what it says and prevents the spring from jumping into the gear case.

Cylinder. The cylinder compresses the air that will force the bullet down the barrel. A longer barrel requires a bigger cylinder, so these upgrades typically go hand-in-hand.

Cylinder Head. You can either silence your gun or improve the piece's air seal by upgrading your rifle's cylinder head.

Air Nozzle. This part pushes the bb into the Hop Up chamber while also sealing the airflow.

Motor. Too powerful a motor can decrease overall performance and negatively affect rate of fire, so speak to a professional before you commit to a motor upgrade purchase.

Battery. A higher voltage battery increases your rate of fire, but too high of a battery voltage may damage internal components. Again, I recommending speaking to a professional about what your gun can handle.

Scopes and optics. This external upgrade is certainly something you can install yourself. A quality scope will improve your accuracy, especially in a sniper-type role.

A sniper is an infantry soldier best known for exceptional long-range marksmanship and covert tactics. It is a difficult, yet highly revered role. If you are interested in becoming a sniper, there are a few things you will need to procure as you prepare for the role.

Airsoft Sniper Rifle. The most important piece of gear you will need is a high-powered, precision-accuracy Airsoft sniper rifle. These riffles typically have an extremely high FPS (power) rating and a long barrel, allowing for more precise, long-distance firing. It is important to practice with your rifle before you assume the sniper role. The more second nature your rifle becomes, the more likely you will be able to achieve your goals on the field.

Scope / Optics. Sniper rifles are often bundled with scopes and/or bipods to help improve accuracy. You should have at least one decent, entry-level scope on your rifle to ensure you can keep a safe distance from your target.

A side arm. You will need a smaller side arm (airsoft AEGs are a popular choice) in case your position is compromised. A simple pistol and holster should give you some defense if you are charged with enemy fire in a close combat scenario.

Camouflage. Quality camouflage will give you the security you need to line up precision shots. Ghillie suits are a popular and effective choice. Choose one that will blend well with the terrain you plan to snipe in. Occasionally you may move between different types of terrain, such as field to forest. Make sure your camo can adapt with the move.

Quality ammunition. Only quality BBs will work with high-performance airsoft sniper rifles. Lower grade BBs will break apart and jam your weapon. Worse yet, if you use cheap BBs you will void your rifle's warranty. High quality BBs that are only sold at airsoft specialty retailers. These BBs will also improve your performance as they improve FPS and firing accuracy.

Skills and knowledge. Being a sniper doesn't mean you need to have the most expensive rifle. Skills such as marksmanship, discipline, and knowledge of the sniper role are much more important. Do your research and keep in mind that snipers don't fire off many shots in a game... it's about making select strategic kills without giving away your position.

Close Quarter Combat (CQC), is a military tactic made popular by Israeli and Russian soldiers that involves using close proximity, speed, and accuracy to violently overtake an enemy target made. In airsoft, CQC is one of the most exhilarating and realistic exercises you can engage in. In modern warfare fellow soldiers, enemy fighters, hostages and civilians are often closely intermingled, making long distance assaults less risky. Since the main objective is a rapid and violent takeover with minimal friendly fire and casualties, a strong CQC soldier must think fast on their feet and have a mastery of their weapon. Here are a few tips on being the best CQC player you can be:

CQC is typically a side arm game... think airsoft AEGs such as pistols and hand guns. Machine guns and large rifles have their time and place, but in most close quarters combat scenarios, they are a disadvantage as they are bulky and less agile.

CQC requires more compact, short range firearms which allow for a higher rate of fire and maneuverability. Once you have selected the right electric airsoft guns, practice, practice, practice. CQC is too high speed to risk inaccuracy.

Most CQC games are played in smaller enclosed areas, often mimicking an urban warzone, though outdoor games are fun as well. Regardless of the location, CQC is fast paced and typically full of surprises, so it is best to know the terrain before-hand.

CQC players are encouraged to wear extra padding. Direct and even ricochet hits can be very painful in this close proximity.

It is recommended that you carry a multi-tool (for possible gun jams), duct tape (for Macgyver moments), water, extra mags, and whatever accessories fit the objective. Smoke grenades are a cool way to enhance a CQC exercise. Camouflage is also recommended for that added element of surprise.

Treat Your Airsoft Rifle Right

While airsoft gear tends to be durable, I have come across a few prematurely broken electric airsoft sniper rifles in my time. More often than not, these rifles were victim to user misuse and abuse. I strongly believe that you should enjoy your airsoft gear to the fullest, but it's also important to take care of your investment so that it will last for the long-haul. Here are a few tips to help you do just that:

Only use quality BBs. If you take only one concept away from this list, let it be this: avoid cheap BBs at all cost! Low grade airsoft BBs are found in sporting goods stores and Wal-Mart. They are sometimes labeled as "Seamless Airsoft 0.20g" or "Seamless Airsoft 0.12g" BBs but don't let the name fool you, these are sub-par BBs and need to be avoided. These cheap BBs break apart too easily, which leads to jams, stripped pistons, and chipped gears. Furthermore, if you use cheap BBs you will void your warranty. High quality BBs are sold exclusively at airsoft specialty retailers and will minimize jamming, improve FPS, and improve firing accuracy.

Beware low battery power. When your rifle battery is low, it's easier for the gearbox to "lock up" which can lead to damaged internal components. To avoid this, keep your firearm appropriately charged and stop using the rifle when battery life is low.

But also beware of over-changing. On the flip side, it is not wise to leave your battery charging overnight with a standard wall charger. This practice can lead to damaged battery cells. Charge for fixed periods of time using a hi-output "smart" charger, which will taper off the current when the battery is full.

Be careful with upgrades. Upgrades should only be made by experts. Keep in mind that raising battery voltage will put more stress on your firearm as it increases will your Rate of Fire (ROF) as opposed to Feet per Second (FPS) or velocity. If you want to increase your FPS it makes more sense to upgrade your spring, but again, this will add more stress to the internals that have not been upgraded in proportion to the spring. In short, it's best to consult with an expert when considering upgrades to your rifle.

Care for your gun. You should always perform general maintenance before and after serious game play. The general maintenance should include unjamming and clearing the barrel of debris, as well as lubing the internal barrel, the hop up and magazine. Expert internal maintenance should be done every 4 to 6 months.

How to Choose an Airsoft Rifle

A lot of people ask me for advice on selecting an airsoft rifle. Here's a quick check list for finding the right rifle for your needs:

Spring or electric (AEG)? Electric airsoft rifles are the most popular choice because they shoot at a higher velocity and have longer range. Spring rifles, on the other hand, have slower speeds and thus shorter range, but they are less expensive. Spring airsoft rifles are appropriate for less experienced gunmen and younger players. I generally recommend electric airsoft rifles for experienced airsoft enthusiasts and anyone considering sniping. Look for an electric airsoft rifle with a velocity of at least 285 feet per second (FPS). If you plan to focus on sniping, it's best to look for Bolt Action sniper rifles with 400+ FPS.

Metal or plastic composition? Metal is very durable and has a nice, real-life feel, but it is also heavier and may cause fatigue in long games with a lot of maneuvering. AEGs that feature plastic receivers or bodies are made of a composite polymer-ABS. The plastic has been engineered to have a high stress tolerance, making it resistant to shock or drop. In many cases these arms are just as durable as metal bodies, but a lot lighter. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and which "feel" suits you best.

Gearbox or no gearbox? If the rifle you select has a gearbox, make sure the parts are metal. Other materials can break or warp much more quickly, damage gears, and will ultimately lead to an inoperable weapon.

Scope or no scope? If you want to add optics to your airsoft rifle, you will need a rifle with railed sight mounts. Airsoft sniper rifles, for example, are intended to be highly accurate at long ranges, so a scope is really a must. Some rifles come with these sight mounts already in place; on others you can add them. You'll also want to check how the rifle mounts to bipods and other accessories.

How much ammo can it hold? Ammo capacity varies. Some players prefer a high ammo capacity so that the need to reload is minimized. Others, however, are will to sacrifice ammo capacity for a more compact gun that is easy to maneuver. Choosing an ammo storage size really just depends on how you want to use your gun.

Be a Better Airsoft Player

In past posts I have discussed strategies for improving your team's effectiveness as a whole. Since we have all heard the old adage that a team is only as strong as its weakest player, I thought it would be valuable to address ways in which you can improve as an independent player. Strong players do, after all, enhance the team.

Know your weapon and gear. Do some basic training, including some ground work, such as running and crawling. Get familiar with the weight and maneuvering limitations of your gear. Learn what works well with your equipment dimensions.

Improve Your Accuracy. Some people think the quickest way to become a better player is to upgrade your weapon. Upgrades are awesome, don't get me wrong, but they are not a quick fix for a bad shot. The truth is if you want to improve your form and accuracy, you have to practice. The good news is... practicing is really fun. Here are a few things to keep in mind when working on your accuracy:

Always aim for a small, specific area on the target... not the target as a whole. Keep your eye on that small area rather than glancing around.

Grip high on the gun so that your middle finger is high on the trigger guard. A higher grip will give you more control regardless of the weapon. It will improve your aim and ease recoil.

Use your fingerprint area to slowly squeeze down on the trigger. This will limit jerking and allow for more control over the gun. Try to make this a fluid movement; this is especially important if you are using a sniper rifle or pistol.

The farther away you are, the higher you will have to aim to hit your target. Practice different ranges and learn what works best for you and your weapon(s).

Be sure to practice shooting while moving around.

Different guns will have a different feel, be they gas, spring or electric airsoft guns. The more you use it, the more instinctual your weapon will be to you.

Know the Terminology. Be sure to research the different war terms that you may encounter on the field. If you are told an enemy fighter is at your 6 o'clock, it's better to instinctively know what that means than to mentally calculate it on the field. There are a number of airsoft glossaries out there worth reviewing. You don't need to know every term, but a solid understanding will help you.

Know the strategies. Most wargames are broken up into teams that are either offense-oriented or defense-oriented. Defense-oriented teams tend to be grounded in a specific area, while offense-oriented teams are on active attack, trying to gain ground. A good strategy if you are on the defense is to find a position that provides both cover and access to enemy targets. The more hidden you are, the better. If the enemy cannot figure out where the shots are coming from, you have the chance to do more damage. If you are on the offense, your main two objectives are determining where harmful fire is coming from, and removing the origin of that fire, thus allowing you to gain ground. It is surprisingly difficult to find a tactically hidden defensive player. Offensive players should try to engage the enemy with minimal movement or noise. Because airsoft relies on the honor system, a fair skirmish requires that players call themselves out when they have been hit. Players must also avoid firing at any player who has been hit but has not yet exited the playing field. A player is eliminated when he or she is hit on any part of the body, including on gear such as goggles and vests. In most cases, eliminated players are supposed to exit the field of play until a new round starts or they are permitted to reenter the game. An exception is when the game is being played with a medic. In this case, hit players typically remain down in place until the player designated as the medic arrives and "revives" them. When a medic is not part of the scenario, hit players are usually required to leave the playing field and return to the staging area, or 'safe zone,' where they remain until the skirmish ends or they are permitted to reenter the game. "Dead man walking" is a widely known expression used in airsoft to signify that a player has been eliminated and should not be a target for enemy fire.

While the "dead man walking" signal is pretty widely known, different fields have their own specific rules for what a player should do after being hit. Some organizations stipulate that hit players should carry their airsoft guns high above their heads while returning to the safe zone. Some say to both hold your weapon high while shouting "dead man walking." Being aware of what these signals mean is important not just so that you can communicate to other players when you are hit, but also so that you will not fire on another player that has been hit. Most serious airsoft players understand hop up and have formed their opinions as to its usefulness, but not all players have quite grasped the concept. Today’s installment of our new "Airsoft FAQs" series focuses on just that topic – what is hop up?

A hop up system in an airsoft gun is designed to increase the traveled distance and vertical accuracy of a pellet fired from an airsoft gun by adjusting its trajectory. Many airsoft players enjoy the ability to hit a target from longer distances than would be possible without a hop up system.

Put simply, a hop up system places backspin on a BB as it travels down the barrel to adjust the path it will follow when it exits the barrel. A small protrusion in the top of the barrel touches the BB as it passes, creating a controlled backspin. Backspin gives the BB lift, allowing it to counteract the effects of gravity for a longer period of time. This allows the BB to move along a more level path, increasing the distance it can travel. Generally speaking, vertical but not horizontal accuracy should be improved with the use of accurately adjusted hop up. Of course, in reality, many factors come into play with regard to accuracy, including the wind and the skill of the player.

Adjustable hop up allows the user to control the amount of backspin that is placed on a BB, but it is important to note that only those experienced with hop up should attempt to work with it. Usually hop up is adjusted by turning a wheel, which moves the protruding nub up or down to put more or less backspin on the BB. Hop up is an incremental adjustment, and adjusting it all the way to one side or the other can cause jamming and inadvertent damage to the gun’s internals. This is because the protruded piece can alter the shape of the BBs exit path too much. If you are not experienced working with this type of system, you may not want to take the risk by experimenting with your guns.

Airsoft Game Types: Paratroopers

Many airsoft players like to participate in different types of airsoft games and scenarios for variety and to become well rounded in their airsoft skills. Periodically, we spotlight some of these different game types in this "Airsoft Game Types" series. Today we are highlighting Paratroopers - an airsoft game scenario in which a group of 'stranded' paratroopers is tasked with completing specific objectives and making it safely back to their pickup zone.

The paratrooper airsoft scenario begins with dividing participating players into four groups. The members of the group chosen to be the paratroopers are blindfolded and led to the designated ‘Drop Zone,’ where they are understood to have landed in this game scenario. The paratroopers are given a basic map of the area and must collaborate with one another to achieve the objectives, which have been determined at the beginning of the game. In a variation of this scenario that makes for a more challenging game, there may be multiple designated 'Drop Zones' with some of the paratroopers starting at each location. When there are four groups as described, one group is comprised of the paratroopers and the other three are assigned to defend three objects that the paratroopers will be trying to "take out."

Often the map provided to the paratroopers contains inconsistencies or tricks to make the challenge more difficult to accomplish. For instance, an objective may be marked in the wrong location, or an objective may be marked on the map that is not actually there.

Each of the other three groups is assigned an object to defend, for a total of three objects that represent the objectives for the paratroopers. The paratroopers are tasked with "taking out" each objective, represented by a flag at each location that must be returned to the "Pickup Zone." The paratroopers win if they are able to return the flags from all three objectives to the Pickup Zone successfully.

This is a basic description of how Paratroopers can be played, though like other game types, the game scenarios can be modified to fit the number of players or the area available for play.

When transporting or handling airsoft guns away from the field, you should always keep them packed away and out of public view. Aside from the legal repercussions, brandishing an airsoft gun in public can have extreme, even deadly consequences. Just imagine the horror you (or your mother, or grandmother) would feel if someone was walking through the neighborhood with a sniper rifle in hand. It is not uncommon for concerned citizens to call the police upon encountering someone carrying or shooting an airsoft gun, unaware that it is a replica. Police officers will also assume that an airsoft gun is a real gun, and will treat the situation as such. If you do not want officers pointing real guns at you, or worse, shooting you, keep your airsoft gun out of sight at all times when in public.

Most players agree that backyard airsoft, or playing in close proximity to homes or other buildings, should be avoided. Maneuvering through fields or wooded areas undetected requires the ability to crawl quietly across any terrain to avoid enemy fire. The ability to stay low to the ground and out of sight while changing locations is a skill that may take some practice.

Additional gear may be needed for optimal performance as a sniper. Airsoft Game Types: King of the Hill

We've discussed a few airsoft game types in previous posts - Medic, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. King of the Hill is another fun airsoft game with the goal of controlling of a predetermined area marked by a flag. Usually, the marked area being defended is a hill - hence the name of the game - but the game can be played with most any area designated as the hill. The hill or other area being guarded should be a somewhat open area that is not overly easy to defend.

In King of the Hill, players are divided into two groups - attackers and defenders. The defenders start out positioned around the flag, which they will defend while the attackers attempt to take over the territory. The game is played with a time limit, usually about fifteen minutes or half an hour, but can be any timeframe as dictated by the game organizer. The team with members closest to the flag is considered to have control of the hill, and the team that has control of the flag upon expiration of the allotted time is the winner.

Defenders of the hill shoot the attackers with airsoft guns in attempt to protect the hill, while attackers do the same to take out opponents and seize control of the hill. Usually in a game of King of the Hill, players who are hit are required to stay out of the game and remain silent until the next round begins. Or, players may be permitted to reenter the match after a certain amount of time has passed, depending on the rules set forth by the organizer of the match.

As with other airsoft game types, the rules and scenarios vary among different fields and organizations. If you are participating in a King of the Hill match, be sure you know the guidelines put forth by the organizer. As always, be safe, play fair and have fun!

Airsoft players have more options than ever when choosing what types of guns to add to their collections. Airsoft guns fall into one of three main categories based on how they are powered:

Spring Loaded Airsoft Guns
Spring loaded airsoft guns fire single shots using the potential energy stored in a spring, which is compressed when the gun is cocked and then released when you shoot. Cocking a spring loaded airsoft gun compresses the spring in preparation for the next shot, so spring loaded guns must be cocked before each shot.

In general, spring loaded airsoft guns cost less than their electric or gas powered counterparts, making them popular starter guns for newcomers to the sport. Most experienced players prefer electric or gas airsoft guns for their power and realistic feel.

Electric Airsoft Guns
Electric airsoft guns, also called airsoft AEGs (automatic electric guns) because of their automatic or semi-automatic capabilities, utilize an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery to cycle an internal piston or spring that fires the pellets. Because of their power, performance and realism, AEGs are the most common type of airsoft guns you will see used in the sport of airsoft and are also the most widely available.

Gas Airsoft Guns
Gas airsoft guns are powered by pressurized gas – in the form of either green gas or CO2 - that is used to propel pellets from the chamber. Unlike spring loaded guns, gas airsoft guns do not have to be manually cocked before each shot. Gas powered airsoft guns are renowned for their power and precision. They are further classified as either non-blowback or blowback airsoft guns.

A blowback airsoft gun will have a slide that kicks back each time a shot is fired, mimicking the feel of firing a real gun. Non-blowback airsoft guns, on the other hand, have fixed slides and revolvers, and do not kick back as blowback guns do. Non-blowback airsoft guns give airsofters an economical alternative to blowback gas guns, but because of their realism blowback airsoft guns remain the most popular type of gas gun.

Airsoft Game Types: Capture the Flag

Capture the Flag is a classic game type that is popular in both paintball and airsoft. Each team is tasked with capturing a flag and bringing it to a designated location while avoiding enemy fire. Capture the flag is a versatile game type in that it can be adapted to accommodate large or small groups of players. There are several variations on the rules of Capture the Flag, a couple of which are described below.

Capture the Flag begins with two teams positioned at opposite ends of the playing field. Usually, each has its own base (or designated starting location) with a flag that the team must protect. Each team’s mission is to capture the opposing team’s flag and bring it safely to home base while defending its own flag and eliminating as many opponents as possible. Typically the rules stipulate that the flag must be visible at all times, including while it is being carried by a player. The rules dictated by the organizer will determine what happens if a player carrying the flag is hit. Either the flag must be returned to its original base or the player may drop the flag for a teammate to pick up and continue with the mission.

An alternative scenario called ‘Center Flag’ consists of two teams and two bases, but only one centrally located flag that each team must try to capture. In the single flag variation, victory goes to the team that returns the flag to its own base first. In an alternative scenario, the team may be required to capture the flag and bring it to the opponent’s base.

As with other airsoft game types, the rules for Capture the Flag vary among different organizations and fields. Even if you are an experienced player, be sure that you are familiar with the rules for the organization with which you are playing.
